EYELASH EXTENSION RETENTION & AFTERCARE
Lash Extension Retention
Eyelash extensions are attached to the natural lash, which means that when the lash grows out (ie reaches the end of its growth cycle), the lash extension falls out with it. Due to our natural lashes being super fine, we don't usually notice when one sheds, but with lash extensions, you will be more conscious as they are darker and more pronounced than our natural lashes.
On average, we shed about 3-5 natural lashes every day (up to 35 lashes per week), and therefore it is quite normal for you to lose a couple of lashes each day naturally as part of your natural lash cycle.
Premature Shedding / Short-Lasting Lash Extensions
If you feel that your lash extensions are falling out excessively or prematurely (without natural lashes), you should contact Lucky Lashes immediately (within 48 hours) to arrange to return to our salon, so we can review and (if applicable) resolve any problems. If you contact us more than 5 days after your appointment with concerns about premature falling out, we will not be able to address and remedy the issue.
Factors Affecting Eyelash Extension Retention
It is important to remember that each person's lashes and lash cycle are unique, which means factors that may affect one person's lash retention might not impact another's. Personal hygiene and lash aftercare will influence the retention of the extensions, and we encourage you to consider the following factors that may affect the retention of your extensions. - Seasonal Lash SheddingSpringtime hay fever allergies may cause your lashes to fall out due to extra rubbing from to dry, irritated eyes. In winter, humidity tends to be low, making our lashes more brittle which may lead to them falling out more frequently.During the summer months, we sweat more, which leads to more oil production (which affects lash extensions adhesive).
- Oil Based productsOily products near the eyes can degrade and shorten the life of your extensions. Oil-free aftercare products (oil-free makeup remover) is ok
- Certain Medical ConditionsThe absence of natural lashes in one area could be caused by rare conditions such as alopecia or another autoimmune disease. It is believed that alopecia is caused by the body attacking its own hair follicles, resulting in full, partial, or episodic hair loss. For people suffering from alopecia, we recommend seeking the advice of a doctor who may be able to prescribe treatments to help your lashes regrow more quickly
Eyelash Extensions & Swimming
Looking glam by the pool or at the beach is easy with eyelash extensions. However, regular swimming can affect your lash retention. Before you jump into the water please read our tips on how to care for your lashes this season
Can I swim in Eyelash Extensions? If you take the proper precautions and care for your extensions this season, you can take a quick dip under the water, but long regular swims will shorten your lash extension lifespan. How can I reduce damage to my lashes? It is best to keep all chlorinated and salted water away from your lashes as salt water and chlorine can weaken the adhesive bonds of your extensions. If you do go for a swim we recommend gently rinsing your lashes in fresh water straight after. If you are a regular swimmer we recommend investing in a pair of goggles. Be Careful of Strong Water PressureThese can put pressure on the adhesive bonds of your extensions and could cause them to break or shed prematurely. Avoid Rubbing your EyesSand and chlorine are part of the beach and poolside experience but can cause itchy dry eyes. Please refrain from rubbing your eyes as this can also weaken or put pressure on your lash extensions.
Eyelash Extensions Aftercare
Our After Care instructions have been created to ensure that you get the maximum retention of your eyelash extensions and to help minimise the risk of any unwanted damage and/or reactionsPlease follow these instructions carefully and contact Lucky Lashes if you have any concerns. In the unlikely scenario that you experience a reaction please contact Lucky Lashes immediately.
24 hours after your appointment
  • (!) Do not shower or wet the lashes for 5hrs (for best results avoid water for 24hours).
  • (!) Avoid Steam & Heavy Exercise for 24hrs
  • (!) No spray Tans 24 hours before or after your appointment
  • We use professional lash adhesive which takes 5 hours to cure. Getting your lashes wet or exposing them to moisture within 5 hours of application can severely affect the bond between the lash and the glue as the water creates a reaction with the glue causing it to “flash cure”, which creates a weak brittle bond.

  • After 5 hours you can get them wet as much as you like.
Ongoing
  • DO NOT USE Mascara or eyeliner – the product gets caught between lashes and builds up, making it much harder to clean and may lead to premature lash loss. If you must use mascara, it is important to avoid using it for the first 24hours and that you use a water-based variant.
  • AVOID tugging, pulling, or rubbing lashes – this could damage your natural lashes. Excess rubbing may also lead to premature lash loss.
  • AVOID oily products near the eyes - they can degrade and shorten the life of your extensions. Oil-free aftercare products (oil-free makeup remover) are ok. Lucky Lashes also has products available for sale.
  • BRUSH YOUR LASHES. Using a dry mascara brush, gently sweep through the tips of each set to ensure they continue looking full and healthy (and to put any stray lashes back in their place).
  • BE GENTLE – rubbing your eyes when you have eyelash extensions may cause them to fall out faster or unevenly. When washing your face be gentle around the eye area and avoid positioning your head in full strength of water flow (let the water run down your face).
  • TRY NOT TO SLEEP ON YOUR FACE – sleeping on your face will cause extra rubbing of your lashes and may cause lashes to fall out prematurely. If you are a side sleeper, you may notice that your sleeping side has fewer lashes than your other side. If this happens try to switch sides for a couple of nights or try sleeping on your back to avoid pressure/rubbing from your pillow.
  • SEEK A PROFESSIONAL - Never try to remove eyelash extensions by yourself. If you want to take a break or wish to remove them, please book a free professional removal to avoid damaging your natural lashes.
  • DO NOT PERM LASHES – Do not perm lashes before OR after receiving lash extensions.
REFILLs
Lashes each have their own ‘growth’ and ‘shedding’ cycle. After a few weeks, you will notice new lashes growing and pushing old lashes out. In order to maintain the quality of our work and your lash health and hygiene, we suggest having a new set (with free removal add-on) every after 3-4 refill appointments. For more information see our Refills FAQ.
